In 1805, Joshua Thwing (Twing) started to build a whole industrial complex in North Barre, then known as Thwingville, which included a sawmill, iron foundry, and lumber production. In 1844 he built a large brick gristmill which featured Barre granite in its structure. Eventually, he used his industrial works and a team of designers and engineers to build similar mills all over the Northeast.
